General security guidelines
During security screening, any substance or article that is on the list of prohibited items compiled by the European Commission and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) as well as Finnish Transport Safety Agency Trafi will be removed from your baggage.
The list of prohibited items is extensive and detailed, and only general guidelines are given below.
Prohibited substances and articles
No substances or articles that are flammable, toxic or corrosive, such as lighter fluids, fireworks, ski wax removers, fluorine-based ski waxes or lock de-icers, are permitted on board an aircraft. Such substances and articles are usually equipped with a warning symbol on their packaging.
Please note that alcohol products containing more than 70% alcohol by volume and aerosols in packages larger than 500 ml are totally forbidden.
Batteries
Spare batteries for cameras and other electronic devices may only be carried in your hand baggage. Devices with batteries installed inside them may be carried either in your hand baggage or your check-in baggage.
Alcohol
Nothing with an alcohol content greater than 70% by volume may be carried in an aircraft.
Items with an alcohol content of 24-70% by volume may be carried in your check-in baggage, but the total amount is limited to five litres. Items with an alcohol content of less than 24% by volume may be carried in your check-in baggage in accordance with the customs regulations.
Alcoholic beverages must be carried in their original packaging. The packaging label and contents must correspond with one another.
Liquids, gels and aerosols
If you wish to carry any liquids, gels or aerosols in containers of more than 100 millilitres, you must pack these in your check-in baggage. Such items include shampoos, creams and lotions.
Only a small number of liquids, gels and aerosols in containers of less than 100 millilitres may be taken on board as hand baggage. These travel-size containers must be packed in a single transparent and resealable bag (e.g. a Minigrip plastic bag) with a maximum volume of one litre. As an example, an authorized bag of this kind could hold 3-5 travel-size toiletry items, mascara and a tube of toothpaste.
Medicines and baby food for use during the flight may be carried as hand baggage.
Sharp objects
Objects such as scissors, corkscrews, knives, metal knitting needles and other items that are sharp or used for cutting must be packed in your check-in baggage. Small nail scissors and wooden or plastic knitting needles may be taken on board as hand baggage.
Matches and lighters
You may only take one box of safety matches or one lighter on board, and it must be carried in your pocket. Such items must not be packed in your hand baggage or in your check-in baggage. Torch cigar lighters and reserve fuel tanks for lighters are forbidden on board the airplane.
Please note that no lighters of any kind are permitted on flights to and from the United States.
Sports equipment
Please pack items such as sticks/clubs, skates and large bicycle cable locks in baggage to be checked.
