New passenger record: The one millionth passenger flying to Asia passed through Helsinki Airport

The popularity of Helsinki Airport among passengers travelling to Asia is growing. This year, the airport passed the millionth-passenger milestone in mid-September. In all service to Asia has increased 9.4 % since the beginning of the year.

- Helsinki Airport's position as the leading airport in Northern Europe for traffic between Europe and Asia is even stronger. European and Asian passengers are increasingly flying via Helsinki Airport, says Senior Vice President and Airport Director Juha-Pekka Pystynen.

The key destination countries in Asia are Japan, Thailand and China. In January-August 2010 traffic to South Korea (+43.2%) and Japan (+21%) saw the greatest increase.

According to a preliminary estimate, a record 1.5 million passengers travelling between Europe and Asia will pass through Helsinki Airport. The growth prognosis for next year is even brighter, with service to Asia expected to grow a further 15 % thanks to the increased service offering.

This year Helsinki Airport’s home carrier, Finnair will increase the number of its direct flights to Seoul, Nagoya, Osaka and Delhi. In addition, the airline will open a direct route to pulsating Singapore in May next year and increase flights to Hong Kong in June. There will be 11 long-haul destinations, more than in any other Northern country.

- Helsinki Airport's competitive edge is its geographical location. The fastest route between Europe and Asia goes via Helsinki. For the passenger, shorter distances usually also mean shorter flight times, says Pystynen.
