Helsinki Airport's air traffic control tower to become the most modern in the world

The airdrome control system at Helsinki Airport will be modernized to a fully digitalized state during the autumn. The electronic flight strip system (eSTRIP) to be implemented at the air traffic control tower by the end of 2010 will be the most advanced in the whole world.

In the new eSTRIP system, route clearances for aircrafts are in the digital format, and sending information directly to the flight deck of an airplane will be possible. Before, this information was managed with the help of paper slips. The system will bring efficiencies also for the air traffic control approach, which will be able to automatically observe the departure order of airplanes and changed clearances.

– Apart from automating processes, the system also automates the information flow. We keep attuned to what is going on, since all changed information enters the system without any manual stages, Pasi Olli, Deputy Director of the Air Traffic Control, says.

The renovations at Helsinki Airport are related to the development of landside traffic, which, among other things, includes updating of the surface movement radar system. In addition to the single radar antenna currently in use, two new radar antennae as well as a separate multilateral positioning system that uses the latest technology have been installed at the airport a year ago. With their help, movements of aircraft and vehicles can be controlled better, says Raine Luojus, Director of Operations of Air Navigation Services.
