Transfer traffic between Europe and Asia grows further at Helsinki Airport

International passenger traffic at Helsinki Airport enjoyed growth during the summer. Since the beginning of the year flight traffic between Europe and Asia has increased the most, with 9.4% more passengers than last year during the same period (January-July). New airlines and additional flights have given a major boost to traffic volume at Helsinki Airport.

- Helsinki Airport's position as the leading transfer airport in Northern Europe for traffic between Europe and Asia is even stronger. European and Asian passengers are increasingly flying via Helsinki Airport, says Senior Vice President and Airport Director Juha-Pekka Pystynen.

During the period January-July, 842,000 passengers passed via Helsinki Airport, which is 9.4% more than last year. Key Asian destination countries are Thailand, Japan and China. In January-July traffic to South Korea (+37.5%) and Japan (+24%) saw the greatest increase.

New European destinations and additional flights have increased the Helsinki Airport service offering considerably. Meridiana fly began service from Florence to Helsinki in co-operation with Finnair, thus bringing in feeder traffic for its Asian routes.

The largest Nordic low cost airline, Norwegian, began service to Stockholm and Oslo in April. The routes have been a success and Norwegian doubles the number of flights to Stockholm in September. Other new routes, such as easyJet's Paris and Manchester service, have picked up traffic.

Finnair launched on 16 August a new route to Stuttgart and Stockholm's Bromma airport together with Denmark's Sun-Air. International traffic will be further increased when Blue1 launches its service to Munich in September.

The total number of passengers for Helsinki Airport in January-July was 7.4 million, which is on a par with levels for the previous year. There were a total of over 6.1 million international passengers (+2.3%), 1.3 million (+17.5%) of which were transit passengers.

Growth in international traffic has risen sharply during the summer. There was a 10.2% increase in traffic volume in May, 9.6% in June and 5.9% in July. Although there were 1.3 million domestic passengers, growth was negative (-9%).
