Aiming for an environmentally aware airport

Environmental work at Helsinki Airport is based on the Finavias’s environmental policy. All activities are based on an ISO 14001 compliant environmental management programme.

A comprehensive monitoring system not only enables to obtain information about the environmental impacts of our activities but also helps to plan, direct and monitor any remedial actions required.

30 years of working for the environment

Environmental work at Helsinki Airport addresses the protection of surface and groundwater, aircraft noise control and the development of waste management. These are the fronts on which Helsinki Airport has been systematically active over the past 30 years. Focal areas have shifted through the years to follow the developments in Finnish environmental legislation during different decades.

Even though new areas are constantly being added, Helsinki Airport is actively working on all areas of environmental work. In the 1970s, the main emphasis was on water protection. In the 1980s, the focus was on waste management and in the 1990s it was the turn of aircraft noise control.
